Baby showers are a time-honored tradition. Showering a mama-to-be with diapers, clothes, and other must-have items for their new baby is like a birthday party before the birthday, and it’s always a good chance to catch up with friends and family before your little one is born (or even after, looking at you Sofia Richie!). But while our baby showers typically look like cake, silly games, and colorful balloons, many celebrities have taken it up a notch (or 12!) with their soirees.

FAQs

Who not to invite to your baby shower? ›

The modern baby shower has no strict rules: You can invite whoever the family wants to be included. Just be sure to clearly state whether or not you're accommodating +1's.

Who should not host a baby shower? ›

Any member of the immediate family (especially the mother) should NOT host a baby shower before the baby is born. This old-school secret code is still relevant today because it appears audacious, as if the expectant mother just wants presents, which is self-serving by having her immediate family host the party for her.

Can a mom throw a baby shower for her daughter? ›

Typical baby shower etiquette dictates that the parents-to-be shouldn't throw their own party since doing so could be perceived as asking for gifts.

Who typically pays for a baby shower? ›

The hostess traditionally pays for the baby shower and its associated costs. However, the hostess can divide up the responsibility and costs by asking a few close family members or friends to co-host. This helps to reduce the overall expense and alleviates some of the financial obligation of hosting a baby shower.

Who is supposed to give the mother to be a baby shower? ›

Because gifts are central to showers, having a member of the honoree's (or husband's) immediate family host appeared self-serving. Today it is appropriate for anyone to host a baby shower, as long as there's a legitimate reason.

How many people is it appropriate to invite to a baby shower? ›

Traditionally, baby showers are intimate events, with the average number of attendees being about 20 and definitely fewer than 50. After you figure out who you want to invite, you'll have a baseline guest list.

Who pays for food at a baby shower? ›

If you're hosting your own Baby shower and inviting people, I would expect that you were paying for the celebrations. If your friends were organising it for You (most common IMO) they would all pay for themselves.

Who traditionally plans a baby shower? ›

Who plans and hosts a baby shower? According to tradition, baby showers are typically hosted by a friend or distant relative (like a cousin or an aunt) instead of an immediate family member. This custom is believed to have developed to avoid the appearance that the family was simply on a mission to collect gifts.

What is a sprinkle baby shower? ›

A baby sprinkle is a casual and smaller-scale version of a baby shower. It is typically held for parents who are expecting their second, third, or subsequent child. The term "sprinkle" is a play on words, as it suggests a lighter celebration compared to the more elaborate and traditional baby showers.

How long should a baby shower be? ›

A baby shower usually lasts 2-3 hours. Budget about 30-45 minutes at the beginning for guests to arrive, nibble on some food, and mingle with one another before the games / entertainment begin. Spend the next 30-45 minutes playing games. And the rest of the time having cake and opening gifts.

Can grandma throw a baby shower? ›

They feel that, along with close friends, cousins, and coworkers, it is now appropriate for anyone, grandparents-to-be included, to host a baby shower as long as there's a good reason.

How much money is acceptable for a baby shower? ›

We'll break it down by relationship: For coworkers or acquaintances, people tend to spend around $30 to $50. For friends or distant relatives, many people spend between $50 and $100. For close friends or family members, most people spend between $100 and $200 or more.

What if no one offers to throw you a baby shower? ›

This can be tricky. If you have announced that you are having a baby and no one has offered to throw you a shower by 15-20 weeks, here are some things you can do: Subtly mention to your mom, sister, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and best friends that no one has offered to throw you a shower.

Who is typically invited to a baby shower? ›

Who Do You Invite to a Baby Shower? Close friends and family members should be invited to the baby shower. You should always consult with the mom-to-be on the guestlist though, just in case she has any co-workers or friends she wants to add to the list.

What is the proper etiquette for baby shower invitations? ›

To include on the invitation: the name of the expectant mother or parents, the host's contact information and address, RSVP information, reply-by date if necessary for party planning, and, if revealed, the baby's gender. To not include: registry information.

Should you invite your mother in law to your baby shower? ›

Mother-In-Law - Even if you don't have the best relationship with your mother-in-law, there is no excuse for not inviting her. She is your future child's grandmother after all! Father-In-Law - This would only be necessary if you will be having a co-ed shower.

Should you invite your coworkers to your baby shower? ›

Let them know that your family and friends are going to be hosting a baby shower for you that you would like them to attend. They are adults and deserve to be treated as such. By inviting your co-workers you make it clear that you want to include them in this part of your life.
